What Dophins Could You See? On our Dolphin Watch Trips you can see up to 4 species of Dolphin. To learn more about the dolphins you could see around Hervey Bay and Fraser Island click on one of the links below. Common dolphins are contrary to their name only occasionally seen in the bay preferring the deeper oceanic waters on the eastern side of Fraser Island. Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphins (sousa chineses) are observed in small (up to 20 animals) residential pods, they are found throughout the bay inside Fraser island as well as the shallow waters of the Great Sandy Straits. Inshore bottlenose dolphins (aduncas) permanent residents to the bay, Fraser island and the Great Sandy Straits. Offshore bottle nose dolphins (tusiops truncatus) are seen in the northern parts of the bay and Fraser island all year round during winter we see greater numbers of them venturing into the lower (southern) parts of the bay chasing the bait fish that school up in the bay at this time of year.
